I did not stop reading this book until it unfortunately ended. Like always Ms. Dawn created a magical world with great leading ladies who know how to stand up for themselves. The male lead in this book also had me wanting to switch places with poppy. I really recommend this book to all the people who even look at the summary and are debating purchasing this book. Trigger Origin Book 1 edition by Scarlett Dawn Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
First off, is there anything more cliche in a paranormal romance than a heroine who is a human and whose biggest flaw is klutziness? In this book it went past cliche and insulted the reader's intelligence. The author takes that tired cliche to the next level by giving us a character who is supposed to be a highly skilled fighter, capable of acing elite military tests and silently slipping through hidden passageways, and who is also supposed to be dumb enough to walk into walls. All the time. While she is silently escaping through hidden passageways, even.
The contradictions don't end there. The whole reason she runs away from home is to avoid being forced to marry due to a law meant to keep the population from dwindling - a law that the male lead supports, btw. But then she warms up to the idea of a committed relationship with the hero REAL fast, while she's still excited about joining an army that she said she only wanted to join to avoid marriage. It's also never clear what her politics are, even though she is signing up for the army with her father's enemies. Like, his literal enemies whose army fights against his army. And the heroine's supposedly brilliant solution to the PR nightmare she's created is a) obvious (why are we meant to think she's smart??) and b) wouldn't do a thing to resolve that problem.
Which brings me to the next issue. I skimmed to the end, out of curiosity about how things would be resolved, but none of those major problems - joining an army that fights her father, magical creatures attacking her, not wanting to get married young but suddenly being stuck with a possessive man - are ever resolved! And I don't mean that it's a cliffhanger. I mean those problems get glossed over or (in the case of the magical creatures trying to kill her) pushed off till the next book.
As far as character development, they were all flat. The dialogue sounded pretty much the same, no matter who was talking. And they tended to sound juvenile. The heroine is the one character we should have understood best since the POV was first person, but she doesn't even share her own political views, just makes lots of references to her father's views. If she's supposedly so independent and is angry about the law requiring women to get married young, you'd think she'd have some political views and feel conflicted about fighting for the very people who made the law she hates.
And the author does not have a way with words. At all. Half the time it seemed like someone had circled all her cliche phrases, and she tried to save them by changing one word instead of coming up with original wording, which only make them more noticeable and awkward. Or maybe she wrote with a thesaurus and no sense of nuance. Who describes someone's jaw dropping with the phrase "my mouth bobbed"? Ms. Dawn thought that one was such a winner she used it every other page. And how is it supposed to be sexy to say "he bashed my back against the head board." Bashed? It was suck clunky writing I was laughing out loud in scenes that were clearly not meant to be funny.
I don't understand where all the positive reviews are coming from, unless the author asked all her friends to write nice stuff. In fact, that's probably exactly where they're coming from.
This book is aaaasssoooomme!!
Trigger sets place in a future where humans have almost completely destroyed themselves and shifters now secretly rule it through corporations. Cool. Enter female lead! Poppy is beautiful and deadly, but she isn't perfect and i love that. She's also a super klutz which makes her even better to me. Enter male lead! Oh Godric (love that name) how i can sing your praises. Ultimate alpha male though not uncompromising and still a person of his own. Not just an "alpha male robot" as i have seen in some cases. The story is full of characters that are interesting and funny and make you want more of them, definitely not just supporting cast. Also a mystery villain that needs to be defeated! Which is what every good story needs.
There is also lots of STEAM. Like "i need to take my glasses off, i can't see a thing" steam. So yeah. Its a good book.
My only complaint (its really a personal flaw) is that i wish it was longer. The length made it feel a little rushed. There wasn't any build up. You just go right in to it and then it just goes. But again thats more me since i normally read books with 400+ pages. Since this is a series and it was still amazing I can deal. And best of all there isn't any scary cliffhanger which Scarlett is known for.
Overall---YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK.
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. I hope you enjoyed it.
The humans have decimated their populations. The shifters can only mate with humans. The shifters have decided to do as much as they can to ensure the continued existence of the human race, even though they can't let the humans know. They just control them.
Fast paced, passionate, humorous and unpredictable, I loved reading this book. Can't wait for the next.
Hot as hell, and a really good read.
Loved this book from start to finish.
It has
- A woman with a spine and sass )
- A man who loves to control
- A really good story

"Her little fingers are cute" #swoon
The shifters presented in this book were done in a way that kept me wanting to read more. I usually don't read these books but anything Scarlett Dawn writes are the best of the best. There was a lot of mystery and intrigue. Following Poppy, the main character, around was a true adventure. You'll be satisfied with the closing but dying to read about Finn in the second book. At leat that's what I'm hoping!
I rarely give 5 stars anymore, but this one sucked me in and I couldn't stop reading.
The blurb informs us that shifters have taken over and are trying to rebuild the world that humans messed up. Humans still don't know about them though.
Poppy is sassy funny. After reading it all, I do find it a bit hard to believe that Godric did not have an idea as to who she was.
I just wish it had been longer.
